resume tips for customer service professionalsAre you looking to land a customer service job? Are you looking to have a leg up on your competition to get the job? I assume your answers are ‘yes’ to these questions…right? Right. Customer service jobs are very competitive. In fact, it’s one of the most popular positions people compete for.

Customer service jobs can include face-to-face customer service to phone support. The need for highly proficient customer service professionals has never been greater, especially with the new avenues of customer relations. Social media can be viewed as a customer service hub.

You face the daunting task of having your resume be seen by either a recruiter or the hiring manager. Here are 5 tips on how to get your resume seen and stand out from the rest of the field.

1. Target Your Resume for Customer Service

The majority of people create a general resume of their past experiences and send it out. Well, you want your resume to be specific and speak to the customer service job itself. Cater that resume to include customer service search terms, and tweak your job duties to better fit the job description in which you are applying for. Don’t just send a general resume.

2. Keep it Professional

You want to keep your resume in an easy-to-read format. You don’t want the employer to have to search for what you did in your past positions. Create bullet points and use bold. Don’t make your resume loud or flashy, it won’t help you.

3. Use proper spelling / grammar / punctuation

Proof read, proof read, proof read. Relying on the spell check on your computer can cost you an interview. If you are misspelling words and using bad grammar on your resume (when you are trying to impress the hiring manager) what will happen when you get the job and no longer have to impress? Bad spelling = Big turnoff for hiring managers. Oh, and did I mention proof read.

4. Keep it consistent

Make sure your resume is easy to read. Keep the same format throughout the resume. If you have a difficult to read resume, hiring managers will just move onto the next resume. The hiring manager’s time is valuable, and they can’t be wasting time trying to figure out what you are trying to say on your resume.

5. Avoid Fluff

You want to avoid words like hard worker, reliable, ambitious, independent, trustworthy, etc. These are just fluff words and don’t add any value to your resume. You want to include words that reflect positive change. Enhanced, influenced, restructured, or attained are good words to include on your customer service resume.
